India launches online application for citizenship

India has introduced a new online application system for faster, simpler and transparent processing/tracking of the applications for grant of Indian citizenship, home ministry officials said.

The new system will help in setting up a centralised database of citizenship applications with the home ministry.

"There will be uniformity in processing of applications and citizenship cases will be processed faster. It will also help in better monitoring and tracking of the cases as the applicant would be able to see progress of his or her case," said an home ministry official.

Earlier, the process would take a long time as the application had to be submitted to district magistrate from where it was sent to state government and then the union home ministry.

"As per new procedure, the applicants can apply online at the website for quick processing of the applications by the agencies concerned and the central government," he added.
