India rejigs manufacturing competitiveness council

The government has reconstituted the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council which is responsible for formulating policies to boost industry growth under the chairmanship of V. Krishnamurthy.

The 28-member body, which includes government officials and top corporate leaders, was 'reconstituted vide a government gazette notification dated Aug 17, 2011', a commerce and industry ministry statement said.

As chairman of the Council, Krishnamurthy holds the rank of a cabinet minister in the Indian government.

The government is likely to announce a National Manufacturing Policy soon, aimed to boost manufacturing growth and help create over 100 million additional jobs in the next 10 years.

Members of the reconstituted body from the industry side include Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata, TVS Motor chairman Venu Srinivasan, S. Kumars Group chairman Mukul Kasliwal, Larsen & Toubro chairman A.M. Naik, ITC chairman Y.C. Deveshwar and Bharat Forge Ltd chairman Baba N. Kalyani.

Presidents of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) represent industry lobbies in the Council.

From the government side, the Council comprises senior officials from different departments.

Kaushik Basu, chief economic adviser in the finance ministry, and Isher Judge Ahluwalia of the Indian Council for Research in International Economic Relations are the two economists in the reconstituted body.

The Council has been set up by the government to serve as a policy forum for "credible and coherent policy initiatives in the manufacturing sector".

Its role is to energise and sustain the growth of manufacturing industries in India and also help in the implementation of strategies.
