India seeks Germany's help in green tech, electric vehicles

India has sought German expertise to develop green technologies and electric vehicles in order to cut carbon emissions. Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma met German Federal Minister for Transport, Building and Urban Development Peter Ramsauer in Berlin on Thursday.

Sharma said both the countries are committed to reduce carbon emissions. "We are also seeking a common approach to implement targets for government of India's National Mission for Electric Mobility," an official statement quoting Sharma said.

It added that about 1,500 electric vehicles are operating in Germany and it aims to increase them to one million by 2020.

Germany is also a world leader in energy-efficient technologies in the transportation sector. Indo-German Joint Working Group (JWG) on automotive sector has helped to intensify bilateral cooperation in the development of efficient automotive technologies and alternate fuels and drives, it added.

"Both countries are exploring areas of cooperation, including in future road map for India's Auto Fuel Policy, Electric Mobility Plan in India. The extension of the JWG on Automotives for another two years is indicative of the progress being made," it said. Sharma was in Germany for a five-day visit.

The statement said that at present, India is working on National Mission for Electric Mobility to tackle challenges like infrastructure and technology for manufacturing of electric vehicles.

"We are also seeking a common approach to implement targets for Government of India's National Mission for Electric Mobility," the statement quoting Sharma said. Sharma also sought German participation in developing National Manufacturing Investment Zones (NMIZs).

He said Germany can be of great help in making NMIZs eco-friendly as German cities are among the greenest in Europe. "We would welcome participation of German Government and private sector in this project which is the most ambitious infrastructure project in the world," the minister said.

In 2011-12, the bilateral trade between the countries stood at USD 23.64 billion.
