New telcos get sizeable customers
The new telecom players are adding moderate number of customers which could help them to gain critical mass to survive in India’s competitive telecom market.
Videocon, which launch-ed mobile services just two months back, now has 13 lakh customers, with 7 lakh added in May. Norway-based Telenor’s subsidiary Uninor, w
hich entered India’s telecom space in December, has 50 lakh subscribers. Though it lost 8,000 customers in May, it had added some 7 lakh new subscribers in April.
Russian giant Sistema’s MTS has 46 lakh subscribers in India with some 4 lakh added only in May.
These numbers could be small when compared huge additions by old players, but as the new players, who currently operate in few circles, expand their operations, they are likely to offer serious competition to the older players.
