Online hunt for staff to go up

Jan. 11: Make sure to spruce up your resume that you have posted online. For, going by the reports of online recruitment agencies, most companies across various sectors are busy scouting for prospective employees on the internet this season.

In fact, two job portals that have come out with their December employment indices say that online recruitment activity has gone up during last month as a result of improvement in overall hiring activity. Employment indices, which are a measure of monthly online hiring trends, of both online job portals, Monster.com and Naukri.com have shown an uptick in December.

While opportunities in the IT and BPO sector were up marginally, hiring activity in retail peaked during December, the Monster survey said.

“Online recruitment ended the year on a high note. This is especially true for technical sectors like IT and BPO/ITES,” said Mr Sanjay Modi, managing director (India/ Middle East/ South East Asia), Monster.com Naukri’s report, however, has indicated a marginal lull in the IT/BPO hiring activity during the quarter attributing it to the end of year holiday season.

Confirming this trend, Mr Krishna Prasad, the global head of delivery at Chennai-based UST Global, says, “Our hiring in the second quarter was not as high as in the first one. It was around 10-15 per cent in the recent months.”

Recruitment in sectors such as auto, oil and gas and construction grew in December 2010 across all experience brackets starting from freshers to senior management, notes the report from Naukri.com, a group company of Info Edge India.

Says a senior manager of a recruiting agency, “There was lot of hiring for technical and marketing roles in auto, retail and construction companies during the quarter.” On an optimistic note, Info Edge chief executive officer, Mr Hitesh Oberoi, said: “Job seekers can look forward to happy times ahead as Job Street will start gaining momentum in the first quarter and accelerate by mid-year.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
