Parliament adjourns repeatedly after uproar over UP farmers' issue

Farmers’ protest over land acquisition in Uttar Pradesh derailed proceedings in Parliament on Monday with both the Houses adjourning twice over the issue, which saw BJP, SP, RLD, Shiv Sena and JD-U members storming the well in the Lok Sabha.

Trouble over land acquisition from farmers in Uttar Pradesh, in which three persons were killed, began as soon as the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha assembled for the day.

The Upper House witnessed a clash between BJP and BSP members soon after it met for the day. But, after some time the House could take up the listed questions.
The matter was raised again during Zero Hour and the House was adjourned for 15 minutes following uproar.

When it reassembled, the trouble continued prompting deputy chairman K. Rahman Khan to adjourn it till 2 pm. The chair had observed during Question Hour that the issue could be discussed during the Zero Hour, but as the commotion continued, the House was adjourned for lunch.

In the Lok Sabha, BJP and SP members stalled the Question Hour. Barely minutes after it met for the day, the House was adjourned for an hour by speaker Meira Kumar.
When the House reassembled at noon, similar protests were witnessed and the House was adjourned till 2 pm after papers were laid. Members trooped into the well shouting slogans “kisano par atyachar band karo.'

Congress members, including Jagdambika Pal, P.L. Punia and Kamal Kishor, were on the verge of rushing towards the well but were advised not to do so by minister of state for parliamentary affairs V. Narayanasamy.

Dara Singh Chauhan of BSP, which is in power in Uttar Pradesh, tried in vain to put forward the state government's position. He could not be heard in the din. SP and BJP members, including Varun Gandhi, rushed to the well raising slogans against the killing of three persons in Mathura and Aligarh during protests over land acquisition for Yamuna Expressway.

The farmers have been holding demonstrations for nearly three weeks near Aligarh demanding compensation at the rate paid to Noida and Greater Noida farmers. The protests turned violent over the past two days with three persons being killed in police firing.

The 165 km-long eight-lane expressway connecting Noida to Agra is aimed at reducing driving time between New Delhi and Agra drastically.
