Singh prods India Inc to focus on rural areas
The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Wednesday asked the Indian industry to reach out to the rural economy and contribute in the efforts in skill development. Dr Singh chaired the first meeting of the newly-constituted Prime Minister’s Council on Trade and Industry.
During the meeting, he invited the members to form sub-groups on subjects of their interest including on food security, backward area development and corporate social responsibility to deliberate further on these issues, and give their recommendations to government. The PM’s Office will co-ordinate and facilitate these groups.
The finance minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, the commerce and industry minister, Mr Anand Sharma, and PM’s Economic Advisory Council chairman, Dr C. Rangarajan, were present during the meeting. Among the members from the industry who attended the meeting were Mr Rata Tata, Mr Mukesh Ambani, Mr Azim Premji, Mr Sunil Mittal, Ms Kiran Mazumdhar Shaw, Ms Chanda Kochhar and Mr Sunil Kant Munjal.
During the meeting, the Assocham president, Ms Swati Piramal, said the industrialists raised their concerns about growth and how to take the economy back on track.
According to sources, the government showed confidence that India would not be impacted by the Greek crisis as the country’s growth is mainly driven by internal factors.
The government in a statement said members express-ed confidence in the stre-ngth of the Indian economy and its increasing contribution to the global economy.
The members also discussed various issues such as the use of clean technology for energy and economic security, research and development to further industrial growth and the contribution of industry to food security.
