Tata to get Land Rover assembly line to India

Mumbai, Aug. 10: Tata Motors may start assembling Land Rover vehicles in India by next year. The company is also toying with the idea of manufacturing marquee brands JLR in China. “We have seen a good response in India for our Land Rover vehicles. We will start assembling them in India from next year,” Jaguar Land Rover’s chief executive officer, Mr Ralph Speth, told reporters in Mumbai on Tuesday.

He was speaking after the company declared its first quarter numbers. A sharp increase in vehicle sales — from the Indian operations as well as JLR, has helped Tata Motors post a smart turnaround. The company has recorded a net profit of Rs 1,989 crore for the April-June quarter against a loss of Rs 329 crore for the same period last year. Total income was Rs 27,055 crore — up 64 per cent over the corresponding period last year. The stock price of Tata Motors was up sharply after the company delivered the better than expected numbers.

The turnaround for the firm comes on back of strong sales from Indian and global operations. The JLR division sold a total of 57,153 vehicles during the quarter — up 59 per cent.

In its statement, the company said that while sales were up across all regions, China stood out as volumes had more than doubled. Tata Motors is planning to launch three new vehicles in this space, including an entry level model. The JLR unit recorded a profit before tax of Rs 1,590 crore.

On the domestic front, the company sold over 1 lakh commercial vehicles during the quarter. Sales were also up in the passenger vehicle segment, with volumes from the Nano starting to factor in.
