Tata plans 100 utility vehicle showrooms

Automobile major Tata Motors is planning 100 exclusive utility vehicle (UV) showrooms across the country as part of its enhanced focus on the segment, a company official said here Wednesday.

"We have planned UV exclusive showrooms across the country. The advantage of such showrooms is that the focus is concentrated only on a particular segment, which is beneficial for the company and the consumers equally," the company's utility vehicle division head Rajesh Nair told reporters.

Initially 35-40 such showrooms would come up by 2012. The eastern region will get 20, with West Bengal bagging eight of them.

Gradually the number will go up to 100, Nair said after launching a variant of its UV Aria.

"The advantage is that the showrooms will be set up by the dealers, the company will not incur any expenses," he said.

He dismissed suggestions that it was not the appropriate time for launching a new vehicle.

"I don't think the current market condition will have ill effect on the vehicle. We have already launched its premium variant earlier and it has been doing well. We are committed to introducing new vehicles at regular intervals to create interest in the market."

Nair said the eastern region was an important market for the company.

"The hike in interest rates and rising fuel prices has of course slowed down the market but we have continued to grow. In the eastern market, we grew by 18 percent in the last few months which is much higher than the national level of 12 per cent."

A company spokesman denied that the company was looking to set up an assembly plant in a foreign country for its entry-level passenger car Nano.

"There are no such plans as of now. We will continue exporting completely built units of the car."

He also said the company was in the process of exploring new export markets for its latest launch.

"We have been exporting some units of the vehicle to Nepal. Though the number is not so significant but the market is important. We are exploring other markets as well."
