Telcos may move court against Trai
The telecom majors like Bharti, Vodafone and Idea are likely to challenge Trai’s recommendation in court in case these are accepted by the telecom department.
The spat between the established telecom players and Trai has increased with Vodafone writing a letter to the telecom minister asking him to reject the latter’s recommendations on 2G spectrum. Bharti, Vodafone and Idea have sharply criticised Trai’s new recommendations on the spectrum.
According to the industry watchers, GSM lobby CO-AI could take the issue to court on behalf of these players. In the past also COAI has filed cases agai-nst Centre’s policies whenever it had taken drastic measures which it felt hurt the interest of its members.
COAI had challenged the decision of the telecom department to allow CD-MA players like Reliance and Tata to also offer GSM services. The association had fought the government in the telecom tribunal TDSAT and then in the Delhi High Court. The association had also fought a bitter legal battle with the government when it decided to allow then Reliance Infocomm and Tata Teleservices to convert their WLL services to fully mobile by amending their service specific licences to a single unified licence.
