Telcos seeks ban on do not call registry violators
Telecom companies and their industry body COAI have asked telecom regulator Trai to blacklist telemarketers, who violate ‘Do-Not-Call Registry’ and sent unsolicited SMSs or calls to subscribers.
Bharti Airtel said that it has been noticed that even after disconnection of one resource (telecom connection) of such defaulting telemarketers by one service provider, it still remains active. These defaulting firms procure replacement or an additional phone connection from other service providers. “Hence it is suggested to initiate more decisive action by way of blacklisting. Trai could develop a systemic and structured guideline to determine such action,” the company said in a communication to Trai.
COAI said that it believes that there is a need to control telecom resources of the telemarketers to effectively implement Do-Not-Call Registry. “The service providers could also share information regarding the name, location and other pertinent information pertaining to telemarketers, who are repeat defaulters,” said the association. It proposed creation of a common industry database of the blacklisted telemarketers to deter default telemarketers from seeking telephone connections from other operators.
BSNL also favoured creation of a data base of the defaulters so that they are not able to get a telecom connection in future and harass the customers. The PSU suggested that the database should contain personal information of such defaulting subscribers and the database should be accessible to all telcos.
