‘Russia most vital strategic partner of India’

Russia has been rated the most important strategic partner of India followed by the United States and France, the Foundation for National Security Research (FNSR) — a private thinktank on national security — has concluded. In a report titled “India’s Strategic Partners: A Comparative Assessment”, the FNSR assessed the performance of six strategic partners — Russia, the US, France, Britain, Germany and Japan — and evaluated them on a scale of 90. The assessment was conducted based on three variables — defence, economic and political cooperation. The parameters included both past performance as well as future potential.

France on Tuesday virtually bagged the multi-billion dollar Medium Multi-role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) deal for 126 fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force, with Dassault Aviation — manufacturer of the state-of-the-art Rafale — declared as the “L1” (lowest bidder), sources confirmed. Dassault beat its European rival, German-led EADS Eurofighter that manufactures the Eurofighter Typhoon. Dassault said it was “honoured”, while its rival Eurofighter said it was disappointed, but respected the decision.

In a damning indictment, attorney general Goolam Vahanvati has raised serious doubts on the version of events of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen. V.K. Singh regarding the controversial UPSC form that has May 10, 1950, as the General’s date of birth (DoB). While the government has continued to maintain May 10, 1950, as Gen. Singh’s DoB, the Army chief has been contending that May 10, 1951, is his DoB. The Army chief’s petition is expected to be heard by the Supreme Court on February 3.
