The Supreme Court on Thursday questioned the CBI about why it has not so far interrogated former telecom minister A. Raja in the 2G spectrum scam case even though the CAG report was replete with his repeated actions bending policy on allotment of spectrum licences.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved its verdict on the petition of former law minister Subramanian Swamy seeking sanction from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to prosecute former telecom minister A.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday proposed to lay down guidelines for grant of sanction to private complainants in corruption cases, saying the bar provided in the law was being used as a “shield” to protect the corrupt.

The PMO on Saturday filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court on behalf of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to clear his position on the alleged “delay” in deciding an application for grant of sanction to prosecute former telecom minister A. Raja in the 2G spectrum scam case. It stated that as per the law ministry’s opinion the decision on the issue could only be determined after the CBI had collected evidence, oral or documentary.

Even as the Centre in the Supreme Court swore by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s track record of maintaining high standards of propriety in public life, the top court on Thursday sought an affidavit on “his behalf” explaining the reasons for the delay in deciding an application for sanction to prosecute former telecom minister A. Raja in the 2G spectrum scam case.

As the government laid before Parliament the CAG report on the 2G spectrum controversy on Tuesday, the Supreme Court questioned the Prime Minister taking 16 months to respond to an application for the grant of sanction to prosecute former communications minister A. Raja and the CBI taking 11 months to register the case after the matter was brought to the notice of the PM.
