Centre readies to battle Gen.

Amid a day of hectic parleys between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, defence minister A.K. Antony and other top ministers of the UPA government in the wake of the legal challenge thrown by Army Chief Gen. V.K. Singh on his date of birth controversy, the government — in a cautious move to avoid any “ex parte” (one-sided) interim order from the Supreme Court — filed a “caveat” on Tuesday, which gives it a right to be heard simultaneously.

“So in that sense it is the right of every Indian but I am afraid it is very difficult to make this into an issue of controversy. Government has to react, the law minister, the defence ministry. I think the defence minister spoke only a few days ago that he had very high confidence in the Army Chief and if the Army Chief has gone to court, I am not a person to comment,” she said. “The armed forces, we have always dealt with high respect and regard in this country. And I continue to have high regard for the armed forces,” she added.

‘Age row will not affect state polls’

Even as the main Opposition BJP is trying to make the Army Chief Gen. V.K. Singh’s age controversy an election plank, the Congress made it clear it would have no bearing on the polls in five states, especially in Punjab and Uttarakhand.
