Pranab Gogoi, newly elected Congress MLA from Sibsagar constituency, was on Monday unanimously elected as the speaker of the 13th Assam Assembly.

More than a month of the pre-poll slanging match between the ruling Congress and the opposition in Assam will end on Monday when the second and final phase of Assembly elections will be held in 64 of its 126 constituencies.

Assam legislative assembly was adjourned for the third consecutive day on Thursday with Opposition parties disrupting proceedings demanding immediate dismissal of the ministers allegedly involved in the Rs 1000 crore North Cachar Hills funds diversion scam.
