1 dies as lorry rams into bike
A person was killed and another injured after they were knocked down by a speeding tipper at Marina beach early this morning. While the two-wheeler driver sustained serious head injuries, the pillion rider died on the spot.
Hari Krishnan, 23 and Palaniappan, 22, both employees of a private IT firm had gone to the Marina beach for a morning walk on Saturday. A tipper lorry owned by a brick-manufacturing unit rammed into their bike and threw them off their vehicle.
The pillion rider, who fell under the rear wheel of the lorry was crushed to death, while the driver of the bike sustained serious head injuries.
After knocking down the bike, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which swerved right and rammed through the railings on the walkers’ pavement before coming to a halt, the police said.
Since the accident occurred during the small hours of the day, major casualty was averted. The driver of the lorry escaped from the spot leaving behind the lorry. A special team has been formed to nab the culprit.
“The owner of the lorry is a resident of Perambur. The accused will soon be apprehended by the police,” said Ravichandran, investigating officer, Anna square traffic investigation wing.
The other victim, Palaniappan has been admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.
