14 CCTVs to secure Anna Nagar West
Anna Nagar Western Extension Phase II became the first neighbourhood in the city to set up their own surveillance system for ensuring better security for the residents.
In one of the biggest initiatives so far in the city, the residents here mobilised over `10 lakh to install surveillance cameras in 14 streets in the neighbourhood. “It is the biggest initiative by the residents in the city so far. It will help us prevent and detect crime,” noted Mr P. Thamaraikannan, additional commissioner of police, Chennai city.
As many as 14 CCTV cameras were installed in different streets and a monitoring room has been set up at the office of the association. “We managed to successfully finish this project. No association in the city has done such a big project so far,” said Mr V. Rajagopal, president of the association.
According to Mr M.S. Dhas, secretary of the residents association, the decision to install CCTV cameras was taken a year ago. “We started collecting `5000 from each house two months back. We managed to convince everyone of the need for high-tech security though our area is not a crime prone area. Police officials were also helpful in executing the project,” he said.
