150 sovereigns stolen from AIADMK leader
At least 150 sovereigns of gold was burgled from the house of an AIADMK functionary by a suspected “bureau puller” in Choolaimedu on Tuesday night.
The incident came to light on Wednesday morning when Mr Nazar, secretary of Jayalalithaa Peravai of ward number 74, and his family members saw that their bureau had been moved near the window of their house on Anna High Road.
Bureau pullers were active in the suburban areas till a few years back. The burglars got the name because they would drag bureaus using iron rods with a hook attached on one side from outside a window and empty it when it came within reach.
According to Mr Nazar, when he had woken once at 2 am, the bureau was in its original position.
“We believe the burglars struck after 3 am. They had broken the glass panels of the window and dragged the bureau to escape with the booty,” the police noted.
“We are not ruling out the possibility of bureau pulling. But there was no fingerprints and marks of dragging on the floor. The house owner claimed that he had not locked the particular bureau in which all gold was kept ,” a senior police official noted.
Sources said that the infamous bureau puller Nagamani, who was arrested in 2007, had come out of jail after conviction last month. Nagamani, had struck at 68 houses earlier.
