2-hour power cut likely in Chennai to ease demand
The critical power situation in Tamil Nadu figured high on the agenda in the Cabinet meeting presided over by chief minister Ms J. Jayalalithaa at the secretariat here on Wednesday.
Sources said the government was toying with the idea to double the power cut in Chennai from the present one hour a day so as to at least partly bridge the demand-supply gap in the state.
The industrial sector may be told to observe 'power holidays' to reduce their demand, they said.
The state Assembly is all set to celebrate its diamond jubilee on completion of 60 years of illustrious service for the people. The historic jubilee session is to be held on October 29.
Wednesday's cabinet meet reportedly discussed the list of prominent invitees. The chief minister is keen on inviting President Pranab Mukherjee for the celebration, a source said.
Another issue that reportedly came up for discussion at the cabinet meeting was the optimum use of space, infrastructure and allied facilities at the various IT parks across the state.
The government is likely to initiate measures to attract more IT companies to set up operations in these parks, some of which still have substantial space unutilised and under-utilised, the source said.
It said the cabinet meeting also discussed the Koodankulam issue and the Cauvery imbroglio, besides giving formal approval to the draft rules governing the running of school vans.
