T. Nandini, a first year B.Sc Maths student of Quaid-e-Millath College for Women, came to know through her senior that she could receive textbooks free of cost from Rajasthan Youth Association Book Bank Project and return them after completion of studies.

“The books are too expensive and when my senior told me about this project I was relieved as I would not end up bothering my parents,” said the student.

Nandini was one of the 2,500 first year students who received textbooks at the 49th annual textbooks distribution function of Rajasthan Youth Association(RYA) that was held at Kamaraj Hall on Sunday.

Union Minister D. Napoleon and MP P. Viswanathan who were present at the function lauded RYA’s efforts.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Napoleon said students should make their parents proud. “With advancement in science and technology, everything is possible now and students should make use of the opportunity and put in efforts to study well,” said Mr Napoleon.

P. Vishwanathan said students should have an intention to study. He also requested the RYA to create more employment opportunities.

Mr Praveen Tatia, RYA president, said, “We started the book bank project in 1964 with 25 beneficiaries. More than 8,000 college students possess our books every year and more than 80,000 college students have been benefited so far out of this project.”

The Book Bank Chairman Mr Mahendar Bokdia said textbooks were distributed to needy college students and the project covered all the colleges in Chennai and Chengalpattu. “The book distribution covers courses like arts and also engineering and medicine,” he informed.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
