256 AAI employees on relay fast

About 256 employees of erstwhile International Airport Authority of India (IAAI) have started a relay fast at the city airport demanding parity in promotions and working environment compared to employees of erstwhile National Airport Authority of India (NAAI) division.

“We have been fighting for our rights since 1995, when IAAI and NAAI were merged into one unit and named as Airports Authority of India (AAI),” said S.T.F. Murthy, president of IAAI Officers Association. Officials from 16 departments, including maintenance, operations, engineering and fire services, took part in the relay fast.

Mr Murthy said the country has about 1,100 erstwhile IAAI employees and they have been trying to catch the attention of civil aviation ministry, AAI and the parliamentary standing committee by agitating now and then.

“We don’t have anything against passengers. So we have been protesting against the AAI without disturbing the flight movements.

Last year we undertook black flag protest, lunch hour demonstrations and implemented ‘work to rule.’ But this time, we are going ahead with an indefinite relay fast to press home our demands,” he added.

While the aircraft and passenger movements were not disturbed on Tuesday, Mr Murthy said the AAI employees union might join the strike soon and it would result in disruption of flight movements.
