4 injured in private bus accident
Rash driving by the driver of a private bus resulted in an accident in suburban Kundrathur on Tuesday, injuring four passengers.
Eyewitnesses and passengers blamed the driver for negligence, thrashed him and damaged the vehicle.
Other commuters who regularly use that route also joined in and blocked traffic, lamenting that the lack of services by the government transport has forced them to depend on private transport.
Police sources said that a group of students studying in a private engineering college boarded the packed bus operated by Nagammal Transport.
When the bus arrived at Anagaputhur, the driver, Suriya Moorthy, made an attempt to overtake a Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus and this resulted in an accident, injuring four students.
A final-year engineering student, 22-year-old Padmanabhan and was admitted to a nearby private hospital.
Four students who were clinging on to the footboard also sustained minor injuries.
People damaged the bus and also blocked traffic along the Pallavaram-Kundrathur Road.
“The government-run PP 66 and 66 buses do not maintain frequency and often arrive late. The few private bus operators in the area ply at high speed, putting the lives of passengers at risk,” said Dhansekhar, a student at a private engineering college.
Police personnel from Shankar Nagar and Mount rushed to the spot and pacified the demonstrators.
The police admitted the bus driver, Suriya Moorthy, at Chromepet GH and registered a case.
