7 FOBs, 5 subways to help pedestrians

The state highways department has proposed to build seven foot overbridges (FOBs) and five subways with escalators in the city to ease the hardship faced by pedestrians in crossing busy junctions and arterial roads.

State highways minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami said that the FOBs would come up near Chrompet Government Hospital and MEPZ, Tambaram on GST Road, near SBOA school junction on Inner Ring Road, Velacherry bypass near the metro water filling station, near TCS and Perungudi junction on Taramani Link Road and EVR Salai near DG Vaishnav College.

Palaniswami said that sanction has been accorded to construct FOBs at a cost of `28 crore at the seven locations where pedestrian traffic is high. Escalators would be provided on both sides for pedestrians to climb the FOB.

A senior highways department official said that a tender has been floated for constructing FOBs in five locations.

“After awarding the contract, the work would be executed in six months. The contractor would be entrusted with operation and maintenance of the FOBs for three years,” the official said, adding that the project would be executed under the World Bank-funded Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project-III.

The city will also get five pedestrian subways near AG Church on Anna Salai, near MKN Road junction at Guindy on GST Road, near Malladi company at Ekkattuthangal and CMBT on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai.
The highways department has already appointed a consultant for preparing a detailed project report for subways at AG Church, MKN Road junction and CMBT.

The city’s first skywalk connecting Central station, Park station and Government General Hospital would be constructed at a cost of `20 crore, the minister said. The official said that the pedestrian flow in these busy junctions was more than over 20,000 daily.

The decision to construct FOBs and pedestrian subways was based on the recommendations of the Chennai Comprehensive Transportation Study done by CMDA.
