7 kg fibroid removed from new mom
Thirty-five year old Imayavalli’s baby boy weighed only two kilos, but she had been carrying, along with her pregnancy, a 7-kilogram fibroid.
The wife of a coolie; Valli could not get ‘Corporate help’, but luckily for her; she was taken to the state-run Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology where doctors successfully delivered a premature, but healthy baby boy in a tricky cesarean surgery.
Valli was rushed to the IOG in Egmore on Sunday after she developed pain and bleeding.
“Valli used to come here, all the way from Red Hills for regular checkup.
This was her second pregnancy; her first child was born 11 years ago. When she came in with bleeding, we realised that her fibroid had grown; it was a 30x30cm mass and had to be removed immediately,” explained Prof. Uma Shanthi, senior obstetrician at the IOG.
In a three-hour surgery, the team first delivered a healthy baby boy and then set to removing the fibroid. The patient had been carrying an 11-kilo load of fibroid, fetus and placenta.
The surgeons noted that her uterus had not contracted; and decided to perform a hysterectomy as well to avoid further complications.
Valli was given 7 units of blood during the surgery; but is doing well now, added Dr V. Kanagasabai, dean, Madras Medical College.
