73% turnout at peaceful Pudukottai by-election
The by-election to Pudukottai Assembly constituency went off peacefully on Tuesday as an estimated 73 per cent of more than 1.94 lakh voters exercised their franchise.
The polling was by and large peaceful. After the closure of poll, the EVMs were stored in the strong room of the counting centre at Government Arts College for Women in Pudukottai, guarded by the Central armed police force, the chief electoral officer said in a press release.
With the DMK, MDMK, PMK and Left parties boycotting, the by-poll witnessed a straight fight between the ruling AIADMK and Vijayakanth’s DMDK, the main Opposition party in the state assembly.
The AIADMK fielded Karthik Thondaiman and the DMDK N. Jahir Hussain. The bypoll was necessitated by the death of CPI legislator S.P. Muthukumaran in a road accident on April 1. The votes polled would be taken up for counting on Friday morning and the results are expected to be out within a couple of hours.
