AIADMK, BJP to work together

BJP senior L. K. Advani has discussed the Presidential elections with chief minister J. Jayalalithaa at her office here on Thursday.

The 20-minute talks laid the foundation for the NDA-AIADMK coordination in choosing a Presidential candidate, according to Mr. Advani and Ms. Jayalalithaa.

Emerging from the talks, Mr. Advani told reporters that the Presidential election this time witnessed “unprecedented confusion and certainty.”

He would not comment further since the NDA meet is happening at Delhi on Friday. He said the NDA would work closely with the AIADMK on this issue – a sentiment reiterated by Ms Jayalalithaa when she spoke to reporters later.

Mr Advani who was in the city at the head of the Parliamentary standing committee on home affairs, utilised the occasion to call on Ms. Jayalalithaa to discuss the Presidential poll.

“All names figured...it doesn’t need elaboration.... we will coordinate and see to it that the decision as to who is the President of the country is taken properly and we will coordinate about that with all parties,” he said.

“The happenings yesterday in New Delhi particularly Mamataji meeting Soniaji and subsequently Mamataji and Mulayam Singh taking a stand in respect of presidential poll, has made the situation very dicey,” Mr. Advani said, adding, “I have never seen any earlier government handling an important election like the Presidential election so clumsily in such a manner that its position gets worse day-by-day.”

The UPA government was suffering from a “paralysis in decision making” since various scams broke out two-and-half years ago, the BJP senior said.

Ms. Jayalalithaa, who later spoke to reporters separately, said whatever had to be said (about the meeting) was already stated by Mr Advani.

“There is nothing new to add”, she said while echoing the BJP senior’s view that Wednesday’s events showed that the Presidential poll had been “botched up very badly” by the Congress.
