AIADMK holds demonstrations
The ruling AIADMK held demonstrations across Tamil Nadu protesting against the Centre for the 'unprecedented' hike in petrol price and also demanding its immediate rollback.
The nation-wide protest was held in front of all the Central government offices in the state besides in Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, New Delhi and Andamans. The AIADMK’s protest came a day ahead of the agitation called by the opposition DMK, a constituent of the UPA government.
Senior AIADMK leaders, including ministers, MPs, MLAs and state and district functionaries participated in the agitation in large numbers and shouted slogans denouncing the Centre for the steep hike in petrol prices. They said the hike imposed a heavy burden on the people, who were already reeling under the impact of inflation and rising prices of essential commodities.
The protest in South Chennai district, held in front of the BSNL office at KK Nagar, was led by party’s district secretary G. Senthamizhan. Organising secretary Vishalakshi Nedunchezhiyan, doctors wing president Dr Maithreyan and others participated.
AIADMK organising secretary C. Ponnaiyan led the protest in North Chennai district in which Chennai Corporation Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy, party legislator and district secretary V. P. Kalairajan and others took part.
The party members also staged an agitation in front of the IOC facility at Korukkupet. Presidium Chairman E. Madhusudhanan, district secretary Vetrivel and MLA J.C.D. Prabhakaran took part. Similar agitations were staged by the party workers in all the districts to condemn the petrol price hike.
