Appoint cauvery tribunal head: CM
CM Jayalalithaa has sought intervention of PM Manmohan Singh to appoint a new chairman for Cauvery Water Dispu-tes Tribunal immediately.
In a letter Thursday, she said TN had filed a civil miscellaneous petition on March 16, 2012. The tribunal had issued a notice to list the petition for April 17 but it could not be taken up due to the resignation of the chairman.
“At this crucial junction, the resignation of Mr N.P. Singh as chairman of the tribunal has caused deep concern and anxiety in the minds of the people of the state,” CM said, adding, “The tribunal cannot function without chairman as required under section 4(2) of Inter-State Water Disputes Act, 1956, with its two members. As per section 5A of the said Act, proceedings of the tribunal can only be continued if a person is nominated chairman.”
Ms Jayalalithaa pointed out that the tribunal had given its final order on February 5, 2007, allocating cauvery water. However, the final order was yet to be notified.
