Removal of banners put up by DMK cadres to mark the 89th birthday of its party president M. Karunanidhi on June 3 on Cathedral Road and Kamarajar Salai created tension on Friday.

Banners of Mr Karunanidhi erected by the DMK’s South Chennai district unit on Cathedral Road and Kamarajar Salai on Thursday night were removed by the police on Friday morning.

“We have not violated any rule. Though political banners could be erected three days before the event, we placed the banner only on Thursday night.

But the police removed it,” DMK South Chennai district secretary and Chepauk-Triplicane MLA J. Anbazhagan said.

Mr Anbazhagan said that the police has directed them to get permission from the corporation before erecting banners on two roads.

“We applied for permission. But they said it would take one week to process it,” he said. He said he was considering approaching the court if permission was denied.

DMK women’s wing sing paeans to Karuna

The women’s wing of the DMK party celebrated the 89th birthday of its president M. Karunanidhi on Friday.

It was an evening where women party functionaries proved their commitment to their leader and the party with words of praise about the greater contribution made by Mr Karunanidhi towards women empowerment like women reservation, social reformation and Tamil language.

Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi who got permission from a Delhi court to visit the state to celebrate the birthday of her father and party patriarch, credited him for taking various measures for the uplift of women.

She said that it was Mr Karunanidhi who had enacted a legislation for equal share for women in ancestral property.

DMK deputy leader Durai Murugan said Mr Karunanidhi continues to play a major role in the national politics.

He said he had played an instrumental role in the election of first woman president of the country.

“When so many candidates were being suggested for the President’s post, Mr Karunanidhi asked why not a woman be elected for the post,” he said.

DMK deputy general secretary Sarguna Pandian, women wing president M.A. Noorjagan Begum and Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva also addressed the gathering.

As per the schedule released by DMK headquarters, Karunanidhi will start the day by paying floral tributes at the memorials of his mentors, DMK founder C.N. Annadurai and rationalist leader E.V. Ramasamy. The DMK chief will later address a public meeting at KK Nagar.
