BE cutoff marks may dip
With Plus-2 students complaining that the Physics paper in the on-going board examinations was tough, academicians say that centums in Physics would come down drastically resulting in cutoff marks for engineering counselling going down marginally by 0.5 to 1 mark.
Eminent academician and career counsellor Mr Jayaprakash A. Gandhi said that the Physics question paper was good and application oriented as it tested students’ thinking skills.
“As Maths and Physics were difficult for students, there will be a big impact on the engineering admissions this year. The cutoff for engineering counselling will come down marginally by 0.5 to 1 mark which makes it clear that only those students with 198 and above in Maths, Physics and Chemistry will be able to enter top 10 colleges”, he said.
Mr Sami Sathyamurthy, state general secretary, Association of Heads of High and Higher Secondary Schools of Tamil Nadu, meanwhile agreed that the Physics paper was tough. “The questions were concept-oriented and were not according to the blueprint. Students found it very tough and the number of centum will drastically come down,” he said.
Dr N. Vijayan, correspondent of Zion Group of Schools said, “This was the first time in the last six years that the Physics paper was tough. The quality of the question paper was very good but some of the students were disappointed.”
While the Physics paper was tough, students felt that the Maths paper was relatively easy. Manohar, a student who took Maths on Monday, said, “We expected the Maths paper to be tough like that of Physics. But to our surprise the paper was very easy.”
