Boy crushed under bus
A 12-year-old student returning from school in a MTC bus was crushed under its wheels in Otteri on Saturday after he alighted from the moving vehicle.
Vignesh, the son of Sankar and Varalakshmi and a resident of Canal Bank Road at Kanikapauram, usually travelled from home to his school in Purusaiwalkam in a share auto. As the service was not available on Saturday, the boy decided to come home in a bus,, according to police.
“He was reportedly standing on the footboard and as the bus (7B) was turning from Perambur Barracks Road to Oteri he got down. The turning vehicle hit him and ran over him,” the police said.
Vignesh, the son of a daily wage worker, was rushed to hospital by the beat police team. However, the doctors at the government hospital declared him dead on arrival.
The driver of the bus, Rajasekharan, 55, left the vehicle behind and surrendered at the local police station.
“The driver did not want to face the wrath of the people after the fatal accident. So he rushed to the station. The driver has been arrested,” the police said.
The boy seems to have jumped out before the bus came to halt. As he regained balance and started walking, the bus brushed against him and knocked him down, following which the rear wheel of the bus ran over him, police said.
“Students should stop traveling on the footboards of buses. They should also not get down from moving buses. Both are very dangerous and can prove fatal,” cautioned a traffic police official.
