Bus hits parapet wall of city flyover

The rough ride for Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) seems to continue. After a spate of mishaps in the recent times including that of bizarre ‘Gemini flyover incident’, when an MTC bus jumped off the parapet wall and hit the road on June 27 injuring 38 passengers, another incident of a similar kind took place Thursday night at bustling T Nagar when an MTC bus hit the parapet wall soon after descending the flyover near bus terminus.

Five passengers including two children were injured in the incident, besides the driver. A portion of the wall of the flyover measuring 10 metres was completely razed to the ground in the impact.

According to MTC sources, the incident occurred around 9 pm, just a few metres away from T Nagar bus terminus, where route No. 27 C was coming from Thiruverkadu when driver Kasi (48), fell ‘unconscious’.

“The bus swerved to the left just after descending the T.Nagar flyover and came to a halt after hitting the parapet wall. The incident occurred after the driver lost his control due to low blood pressure.”

“As soon as the bus reached the end of the flyover it brushed the parapet wall of flyover and came to halt running for a few metres.

Fortunately, a major accident was averted and pedestrians on the service lane escaped as the alert driver slowed down the bus, despite his health condition” said Mr Jayaraman, Presidents residents welfare association, T Nagar.

Another eyewitness Dinakaran said, the panicked pedestrians started running after they saw a bus coming towards them.

Pondy bazaar traffic police personnel said the driver and few passengers suffered mild injuries. The driver was rushed to the general hospital in 108 ambulance. This is fifth such incident in the recent months.
