Captain Vijayakanth goes on Korea jaunt
Did he choose to keep a low profile or did his personal interest precede party welfare? Call it what you want, DMDK chief and leader of the opposition Vijayakanth’s ways are always different.
The actor-politician has gone on an overseas family tour while the party’s founding day falls this week.
Party insiders confirmed that Mr Vijayakanth left for Korea early Friday and is expected to return on September 16, two days after the party’s founding day.
A party MLA, preferring anonymity, told Deccan Chronicle that they have not been informed of any grand celebration on the founding day. “I have decided to hoist the party flag and celebrate the founding day in a modest way in my constituency,” he remarked.
“Why should we bother about one-day celebrations while we meet people and cadres daily?” another MLA, close to the high command, wondered, referring to the month-and-a-half-long ‘welfare’ tour undertaken by Mr Vijayakanth.
Striking a chord with the MLA was writer and political commentator Gnani, who said, “He has been celebrating throughout the year. He has just completed a statewide month-and-a-half-long tour. There is no harm in giving one celebration a miss.”
Incidentally, the DMK is making elaborate arrangements for Mupperum Vizha, celebration of Periyar and Anna’s birth anniversary and the launch of the party, at Villupuram, on September 15.
