Cash crunch leaves road battered
The Milk Colony Road in Madharavaram continues to remain a nightmare for motorists.
The road connects Kamarajar Salai and Madhavaram High Road and is a vital link road for thousands of residents living in Madhavaram Milk Colony, Mathur MMDA, Chinna Mathur and Manali to reach Chennai city and vice-versa.
Residents complain that since Aavin, which owns the 2.5 km-long Milk Colony Road, does not have financial powers to carry out periodical repair works, the arterial road remains battered all the time.
Mr B. Dinesh Kumar, a local resident, said that the stretch has been in a bad shape for many years and the authorities of Aavin have never taken any steps to widen or re-lay the road.
“We have been demanding the local body to take over the maintenance of the road from Aavin. But our demands are not being addressed,” he added.
Besides two-wheelers, private vehicles and MTC buses, lorries carrying milk use this narrow stretch.
“As many as 50 MTC services from Manali, Mathur, Ennore, Tiruvottiyur and Manali New Town take this stretch every day that connect the interior suburban areas to different parts of the city,” said Mr Saravana Perumal, a resident of Mathur.
According to corporation sources, the Madhavaram Zonal Committee has adopted a resolution seeking to widen the 2.5-km Milk Colony Road into a four-lane road.
He said that earlier when such proposals were taken up, the management of Aavin would turn them down stating that it would affect the environment of the area.
“Aavin has not only failed to relay the road periodically, it has not bothered to maintain street lights too,” he said.
