Centre submits K-plant pact papers
The Union government on Thursday furnished before the Madras high court the copies of the Indo-Russian nuclear agreement signed in 1988 and 1998 for setting up the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP).
Additional solicitor general M. Ravindran produced the copies before a division bench of Justices P. Jyothimani and M. Doraisamy when the petitions filed by G. Sundararajan and K.S. Radhakrishnan came up for hearing.
The bench posted to June 26 further hearing of the petitions, which sought a direction to
authorities to undertake a fresh review of the project by giving the public a chance to express their views on the feasibility of its functioning and restrain the authorities from commissioning it until the review is completed.
On Thursday, Ravindran submitted that clearance for the Koodankulam project had been obtained according to law and that conditions imposed by the pollution control board and the Union ministry of environment and forest have also been addressed.
Short-term requirements have been complied with, while certain long-term conditions need to be complied with in phases and were continuous in nature, he said.
The SP, Tirunelveli, filed a counter affidavit that anti-nuclear protest was going on in areas surrounding the plant.
