Chennai arterial roads to become world-class

Anna Salai, E.V.R. Periyar Salai and Jawaharlal Nehru Salai might get separate cycle tracks besides improved pedestrian infrastructures as part of the proposal to improve the arterial roads in Chennai urban area on par with world-class standards.
The proposals were made by S.N. Bhobe and Associates, the consultant preparing the detailed project report for the World Bank-funded project.
“If you want to develop the arterial roads into a world class one, you should provide space for cycles,” Vinay Sharma, associate vice president of transportation of S.N. Bhobe, said making a presentation at the stakeholders meeting held here.
He said as part of traffic survey, pedestrian count would be taken into account to decide upon pedestrian crossings and construction of subways, foot overbridge and skywalk.
Mr Sharma also suggested collection of tolls and controlling the entry of vehicles into the freeway by signal to manage traffic flow on these arterial roads.
Highways minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who inaugurated the stakeholders’ meet, said that the consultant would prepare the DPR in nine months.
Highways department secretary T.K. Ramachandran said that since the Chennai metro rail work would be completed on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai by 2014, it would be first take up for upgradation.
