Chennai civic body cancels Rs 6.5 cr tenders at one go
The Chennai corporation on Friday cancelled tenders called for Anna Nagar zone (zone 8) following complaints against councillors who intervene in the tender process.
Intimating the issue to contractors, the corporation staff also pasted tender cancel notification letters at Ripon Buildings.
According to confidential sources, tenders worth over Rs 6.5 crore were cancelled at one stroke after preliminary enquiries confirmed the intervention of a few ruling AIADMK councillors disrupting the tender process.
Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy also conducted an enquiry with a few councillors and sought explanations.
The corporation will float fresh tenders once again for zone 8 works, which include 84 works like construction of new stormwater drains, road repairs, provision of security personnel at corporation parks and installing garbage disposal bins.
Corporation commissioner D. Karthikeyan told DC the tenders were cancelled after corporation staff admitted that there were a few intruders disrupting the tender submission process.
“We have decided to provide additional videographers to cover the entire tender process so that transparency is ensured at every level,” he added.
DC carried several reports exposing the irregularities involving a few councillors in the recent past.
