Chennai gears up for Biodiversity Day
A series of biodiversity events will be held in the city on Tuesday as the top brass of the Union environment and forest ministry will observe International Day for Biodiversity, National Biodiversity Authority chairman Balakrishna Pisupati said on Monday.
Addressing a press conference Mr Pisupati said minister of state for environment and forests Jayanthi Natarajan and Chennai mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy will inaugurate series of events to mark Biodiversity Day.
The minister would release the national taxonomy experts’ online database created by NBAI and the mayor will preside over public awareness programme at the Marina.
NBAI would also initiate a pledge ‘ Pledge for life’ on biodiversity conservation among students.
The chairman also expressed concern over the coastal pollution leading to acidification of ocean and depletion of coral reefs along the Tamil Nadu coast.
He also said plastics and marine debris had become a serious threat to Indian marine biodiversity. A special panel discussion with focus on coastal and marine biodiversity will also be held, he added.
Release of biodiversity related publications, a public participation event at the Marina to enhance awareness on marine biodiversity among school and college students are also planned, NBAI sources added.
