Chennai mayor rules out open dustbins
Any collective change is possible only if the individual realises his/her duty.
It is with the same aim that Moonravadhu Shakti, a part of Kodambakkam-based citizen collective, Nallor Vattam organised an event at Ramakrishna School, T Nagar to reiterate to the citizens that it’s their duty to keep the city clean.
A six-point resolution was adopted in the presence of Chennai mayor, Saidai Duraisamy—to mobilise students, adherence to traffic rules, clear guidelines to dispose plastics, voluntary planting of trees, organ donation and above all, a resolve to dedicate four hours of the week towards community work.
Speaking at the event, Mayor Duraisamy said, “We all stop where our household ends, and turn a blind eye towards the city outside. Why talk about just throwing garbage on the streets? How many of you pay all your taxes without fail?”
The Mayor also said he personally noted that scavengers are responsible for littering garbage beyond the bins. To prevent this, the corporation will work towards a new system where there won’t be bins anymore that would be susceptible to be misused.
