Chennai suburbs seek better amenities
Despite the expansion of the corporation boundaries, many residential areas in Chennai’s southern suburbs still lack basic amenities.
Roads not re-laid for several years in Adambakkam, Medavakkam, Nanganallur, Madipakkam and Tambaram and incomplete library building in Tambaram continue to showcase the backwardness of these areas.
“On a hot day, damaged roads spew dust on pedestrians and two-wheeler riders. It is extremely arduous for anyone to even step on the road,” says Subrahmanyam, a resident of Madipakkam.
This apart, several portions of the Medavakkam high road is full of potholes. Added to this, the haphazard parking of vehicles and overspeeding adds to the woes. The road in Vadukkupattu in Medavakkam for instance has not been re-laid for nearly a decade and it resembles a pond during monsoon.
“It has been nearly three years since the work on a new building for a public library began at Gandhi Park in Tambaram. The work is still on at a snail’s pace,” says Mani, a resident. Though a make-shift library has been established here, it hardly serves any purpose.
Residents hope that the new government that has been implementing several welfare schemes, would take steps to improve the infrastructure.
