City college gets ‘stop work’ notice
Tension prevailed near MGR Janaki Women’s College, Adyar on Tuesday after a team of Corporation officials inspected the premises for violations in construction norms.
According to sources, on Tuesday, the Adyar Zonal office issued a “stop work” notice for construction of a ground and first-floor building which was going on inside the college premises stating that the construction was in deviation to the approved plan.
Sources added that the site inspection was held on August 6 and the corporation had requested for the approved plan in original for verification.
The “stop work” notice stated that if the MGR Memorial Charitable Trust fails to comply with the notice within the stipulated time, it would be constrained to take legal against the construction under the provisions of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1971. However, officials at Ripon Building refused to divulge further details.
It may be noted that in the past two weeks, the city corporation and the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, which are facing a public interest litigation in connection with illegal buildings, have been active.
Recently the CMDA struck against a multi storey building in Thousand Lights following court intervention and in a similar development the city corporation issued a lock and seal notice against illegal flats in Anna Nagar Shanthi colony.
Corporation officials maintained that more such buildings were under their scanner and in the past four months, they had sealed more than 200 buildings.
The top brass of the city corporation is aggressively taking action against illegal structures as the monitoring committee framed by the court is set to convene on August 21.
