City in crime tracking network
Chennai city will soon be a part of the crime and criminal tracking network and systems (CCTNS), a central government-funded project for criminal record keeping, according to a senior city police official.
The Rs 200 crore national project will be a comprehensive system to investigate crimes nationwide, besides keeping track of criminals. The data entered in CCTNS will be available to investigation officers nationwide.
“All inspectors in the city will undergo 10-day training to enable them to work on the software which allows them to feed the data in the CCTNS. Some other districts have already completed the process. But this is the first time the state crime record bureau (SCRB) is taking up the crime data in Chennai,” a senior police official said.
A meeting was held at the office of city police commissioner on Thursday night in which senior officials from the city police and SCRB participated. The Tamil Nadu government has allotted `10 crore for the project.
The police believe CCTNS can change the way investigations are being conducted from the first information report stage to the trial stage, because all police officials across the country will have access to the data on criminals and their modus operandi.
According to SCRB officials, all the 1,492 police stations in Tamil Nadu will be covered by the project. In the country, around 16,000 police stations are expected to be covered through the project. Training is being imparted in most states and the system is expected to be in place in 2013.
