City museum readies 3D theatre
Hoping to ride on the popularity wave of watching 3D films, authorities of Government Museum, Egmore, have initiated measures to establish a 3D theatre to serve as added attraction at this historic museum, which is the second oldest museum in the country.
“Work has begun in establishing a 3D theatre in the Children’s Museum with the help of funds obtained from the government,” an official said. The building is being renovated to accommodate the 3D theatre.
The Children’s Museum serving to educate and entertain has numerous attractions including a solar powered fountain and water-pumping unit operated by windmill, life size tyrannosaurus and stegosaurus fibre glass models.
The floor plan and other relevant materials have already been sent to Elcot for executing the work, said sources. Meanwhile, the Children’s Museum is being renovated at a cost of Rs38.5 lakh and the works include replacing cement floors with granite and providing lighting arrangements among the other things.
Established in 1851, the museum boasts of being one of the largest museums in South Asia and rich in archaeological and numismatic collections. India’s first museum was started in Kolkata in 1814.
Interestingly, the museum has some of the rarest and oldest trees, especially the Swietenia mahogany and canon ball tree, in the city. Over 80 genera have been identified under various categories like ornamental trees, avenue trees and those of economical value.
