Civil engineer detained at airport for polygamy
A civil engineer from Punjab, employed in Lebanon and wanted by the Punjab police for polygamy, was detained at the Chennai airport on Saturday.
Immigration officials detained 44-year-old Sadam Varma when he arrived from Sharjah.
The officials acted on a “lookout case (LOC)” notice issued by the Punjab police against the engineer on a complaint lodged by his wife that he stopped visiting her and their two children in Punjab, since he took up a job in Lebanon two years ago.
Inquiries revealed that he had married his colleague, Fathima Renoza, a Sri Lankan national, after telling her that he was a bachelor and had also converted to Islam to marry her, police said.
Varma, after marrying the girl, made her to quit job and brought her to India. He purchased a house at Thirumullavayal and stopped visiting his family in Punjab.
“Every time he returned from Lebanon, Varma would spend his vacation with his second wife,” the police said, adding that the Punjab police is arriving here to arrest him on charges of polygamy.
