Clogged drains mark Ambattur
On Saturday, it was the turn of Ambattur residents and Left parties to protest against the city corporation and state heath department for clogged drains and cholera scare.
The demonstrators raised slogans against government departments for their failure to provide quality roads and prevent sewer overflow.
“The roads are full of potholes and the interior roads stink due to clogged drains. Despite reminders to the local corporation and metro water officials there is no respite”, says R. Mohan, a local functionary of CPI (ML). Wards 81 and 82 are facing water shortage and the ration shops in the locality are maintained under unhygienic conditions, he alleged.
“Despite being a part of the expanded Chennai Uppukara Medupaguthi area does not have power supply and newspapers have even highlighted our plight but EB officials are yet to respond,” says Mr L. Narayanan, a resident of Ambattur. The demonstrators who dispersed after the local police pacified them said they would protest again if their demands were not addressed.
“The living conditions in suburbs are worse and now with the recent merger, residents expect a lot of development activities,” says Mr D. Dhamodaran of Sivasakthi Nagar Residents Welfare Association.
