AIADMK supremo J. Jayalalithaa assumed charge as chief minister a year ago. People who have benefited from handouts like laptop, cow, goat, etc. aver that the freebies have made radical changes to their lives.

They are thankful to the chief minister for her vision to take the state to the numero uno status in the country in spheres like education, health and industry.

It was a dream come true for rural students when they were given laptops. Ms Jayalalithaa’s desire to make government schools on par with reputed ones in urban areas is reflected in her decision to introduce continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) in all government, government-aided and private schools across the state in a phased manner.

The industrial sector is showing positive trends with the setting up of a number of major industries. The government’s industry friendly policy sees the state poised for higher growth.

The vision 2023 document released by the chief minister envisages a total investment in key infrastructure projects of Rs 15,00,000 crores, which would create huge positive externalities and open up the economy to rapid growth.

The state government continues to address the challenges in fiscal consolidation, improving the efficiency of governance, enhancing farm productivity and strengthening infrastructure, particularly in the power sector for boosting the manufacturing segment.

The free livestock scheme, a pet project of Ms Jayalalithaa, becomes the first project to attain its target.

Interestingly, a bonus from the scheme is the number of lambs and goat kids born to the brood stock supplied to the beneficiaries is set to touch the 13,000 mark in two days, highly placed sources said.

In contrast to all other government doles, the free cattle scheme stands out for its many advantages, including the empowerment of rural women.

Doubling the social security pension, free rice, marriage assistance with gold coins for ‘Thali’ to poor girls and enhanced assistance for girls with graduate degree and diploma; doubled maternity assistance to poor women, monetary incentive to reduce school dropouts, distribution of mixies, grinders and fans to women free of cost and solar powered green houses for the poor, illustrate the level of compassion the chief minister has towards the poor who can say positively that their lot has been bettered in a year.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
