Confusion over temple fest holiday
In spite of the Kancheepuram district administration declaring a local holiday for education institutions on Thursday for the Varadharaja Perumal temple festival, many students went to school due to lack of proper announcements.
Several parents, unaware of the holiday, dropped their kids at school on Thursday morning and were surprised when the school managements asked them to take their children back as it was a holiday.
It may be pointed out that Kancheepuram district not only encompasses Kancheepuram town but several parts of Chennai suburbs like Pallavaram, Chromepet and Tambaram.
“We were shocked when the school asked to take our kids back citing a local holiday. After a long argument the management agreed to keep our kids in the school,” said K. Suresh, a parent.
T. Nandakumar, another parent said that the district administration should provide adequate publicity well in advance to avoid chaos and confusion.
“As both my wife and I work, we would have made suitable arrangements to take care of our kids if the school had informed us a week ago,” he said.
Schools have planned to compensate Thursday’s holiday on July 12, but as the School Education department has declared a holiday on July 12 for statewide teachers transfer counselling, it is not clear how they will conduct classes.
The correspondent of a private matriculation school alleged that the district administration had not informed them about the holiday in advance.
“We learnt about the holiday when School Education department officials informed yesterday night,” the correspondent claimed.
