Contractors allege bias in handing tenders
Contractors associated with the Chennai corporation on Thursday complained to the mayor and commissioner about the husband of an AIADMK councillor, claiming he wanted to award tenders for execution of road and drain work only to contractors he favoured.
Around 20 members of the Chennai Corporation Contractors’ Welfare Association led by its president, R. Dharna met mayor Saidai Duraisamy and commissioner, Dr. D. Karthikeyan to complain against Mr Bhavani Shankar, the husband of AIADMK councillor Vasuki.
The contractors claimed they had bid for around 84 tenders invited by the city corporation on Wednesday for various developmental projects such as laying of roads and stormwater drains in zone 8, but a group led by Mr Bhavani Shankar created a ruckus demanding that the tenders be given to contractors he favoured.
“We have complained to both the mayor and commissioner about this matter. The mayor has ordered an inquiry and cancelled the tenders. He has assured us that fresh tenders will be invited again after two weeks with police protection, “ Mr Dharna said.
When contacted, Ms Vasuki denied the allegations saying, “My husband has done nothing wrong. We are here to serve the people. We don’t intend to loot their money.
I don’t want to bring any disgrace to my party by indulging in corruption. I have always wanted to address the problems of the people of my ward.”
