Till September 11 last year, Imanuel Sekaran was just another dalit leader for the police top brass sitting in Chennai.

But after last year’s violence and resultant death of six men in police firing on his 54th death anniversary at Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram, the cops’ outlook has changed.

This year, senior police officers have started camping there in advance to make sure that the already tensed Paramakudi will observe the anniversary without any untoward incident.

Additional director general of police, law and order, S. George visited Paramakudi to review security arrangements.

He visited the memorial and other places besides checking vehicle parking arrangements for the function in which senior politician Ram Vilas Paswan is to participate.

The officials discussed routes the volunteers would take and those they would take after paying homage.

The police have given permission to Tamilaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam to visit the memorial at 3 pm.

Steps taken for smooth celebrations

The police on Thursday informed the Madras high court that elaborate steps have been taken to ensure that celebrations of the Immanuel Sekaran Memorial Day at Paramakudi on September 11 pass off peacefully.

A division bench of Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam disposed of a PIL from advocate P. Pugalenthi, which sought the transfer of three IPS officers and an inspector of police, Paramakudi town police station from Ramanathapuram district to some other district to ensure that SC community members commemorate Immanuel Sekaran memorial day peacefully.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
