Cops set up centre on traffic norms

Accidents caused by negligent driving could soon come down considerably in the city as the Chennai Traffic Police (CTP) is setting up a multi-facility Traffic Education Centre (TEC) with state-of-the-art facilities aimed at sensitising motorists and students, besides traffic police personnel.
The multi-facility center that has modern training equipment, including an amphitheatre, is being constructed at the premises of the new police commissioner’s office in Vepery.
CMDA, which is also the co-coordinating agency, mooted the idea and the Rs 22.6 crore project is being funded by the World Bank under the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project (TNUDP) III. CTP has taken up the construction work.
As much as Rs 20 crore has been spent till date in phases on building and equipment.
The center being developed on a 1-acre plot on Poonamallee High Road as a two-storey structure and is expected to be completed before April, said sources in CMDA.
The equipment at the centre includes audio and video educational training facility and a lecture hall where traffic awareness classes would be conducted.
The centre will be under the control of CTP, but private institutions can also utilise the facility.
With Tamil Nadu registering more than 15,000 fatalities in 2011, such centres would play a key role in bringing down accidents by creating awareness among students and negligent motorists and would be useful for traffic police personnel on traffic control and enforcement measures, said the official.
